When I started being library director twenty years ago the library was a completely different place than it is now. My job is completely different than it was then also. I read some of the blogs and agree with some of the other people that love books and hate to see the passion for books go away. It is hard to imagine what libraries, if they still exsist will be like in another twenty years. I do think that children up to the age of young adults have lost the love of reading for just the sake of reading. So many students come to get books just to satisfy a requirement for a class or accellerated reader points. When I was young we lived on a farm and Saturday was the best day of the week because that was the day we got to go to the public library and get new books. Maybe today there are too many distractions with video games and the internet.
I had trouble adding a contact in Slideshare but I think I was making harder than it is. I can see how it is helpful to have all that information readily available. Why make a new presentation when one is already available. http://www.slideshare.net/jalee1956

I have a Delicious account that I set up when I took a class in Kearney with Michael. It is a good way to find all the websites that I am somewhat interested in when I first see them and probably wouldn't be able to find them again. It also works better than favorites because then they can be accessed anywhere. As far as the tags, I think some tags should be fairly specific or there is the possibility of finding thousands of listings for each tag

I had a little trouble navagating through Twitter but I think it might be interesting when I get used to it. I did a search for Burwell NE and was surprised to find some hits. I started following some of the people I found. I like the small blogs because I never have anything to say. I think libraries could stay connected with Twitter. It would be interesting to see what other libaries are doing.

My neice is doing research in Australia and has been sending pictures home by e-mail. Using my new knowledge I told her to use flickr.com so all of her interested family could see her pictures instantly. That has worked so well for her and for us. No more waiting for the e-mailed pictures to load and this way she was able to post a lot more. It even inspired my sister (another aunt) to create a profile of her own so she could post pictures of her daughter's dorm room.
I have created an account in Library Thing. I don't own enough book personally to really use this. I usually only keep enough books in the house in case there is a blizzard and I can't make it to the library. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/jalee68823

My thoughts about technology this morning involves operating systems. We need to purchase two or three new computers for the library and all our computers are XP. Now all that Dell offers only Vista ,I don't know if we can throw two vistas in with our XPs. After years of working on getting our automation up and running we are finally ready to buy the two new computers we need for that and now I am concerned that our software won't run on VISTA. There is no way we can upgrade all our public access computers at once. My son is wanting to buy a computer and my husband can't understand that once you have a computer there is constant upkeep. I told him it is like having a car or a dog, the upkeep doesn't stop. Monday I will have to make some phone calls and see what we can do. We also need to add a public access computer. Lately we have had so many people using our computers that we have too long of waiting line. When I bacame director twenty years ago this was a completely different job than it is now.

I tried the Flickervision and didn't like it at all. The others were fun but not something I can use.

I used the flickr account I had set up in Kearney at the training with Michael. This morning I took some photos of the happenings at the library. It is a very cold morning but that didn't stop people from using the library. The DAR is having a meeting in the meeting room.

This is Marilyn typing a report for her church. This is the first time she has ever used a word prosessor.

Finding bloglines was a new experience for me. I learned something new. I tried all the sites for searching for bloglines. The Google Blog search was too wide open for me. I did do a search and found my cousin's blog but it was hard to narrow the field to find a blog line I would be able to use. I liked the Topix.net and the Technorati . I found newspapers with feeds that should be very interesting.

Today I IMed with Michael from the Library Commission. I think IMing would be helpful if I had something to say. Now I am working on setting up bloglines and finding feeds. I couldn't find the icon to add the G.I. Independant to my feeds. I am amazed at all the technology that is out there that I would know nothing about if someone didn't tell me. How do people find this stuff? I really think newreaders will be great for personal news. I can't subscribe to or find the time to read four newspapers a day. This way in one spot I will have all the news from all the regional papers and national if I so choose. This will be a great way to keep up with news for the library.

For years I have been trying to get kids to quit IM in the library and now here we are learning to IM for the library. I guess over the years the thinking has changed on technology. It is nice to get an instant answer on IM rather than waiting for a reply.

I am finally starting to think this is fun. I am going back and posting comments and perma links on the Things I thought I had completed. I'm on a roll
I want to take more time to play, I have quilting fabric calling my name, a new hat I am knitting and felting, a new picture to embroider and alway a new book to read.
I am trying again to get this perma link mastered. Here goes.

I really don't know if I am doing this perma link right.
This is getting more confusing by the minute but maybe I can muddle through.

I have always considered myself a life-long learner however in the world of technolgy I do drag my feet. Habit number 6, use technology to your advantage might be the hardest to tackle.
